Nyu Creative Writing Mfa Acceptance Rate
Update in progress. We aim to finish this list by January 31, 2021.
Below is a list of creative writing MFA programs that fully fund ALL of their students. Programs that do not meet our definition of full funding but in practice fund the majority of their students are on the Mostly Funded MFAs in Creative Writing List. If your program is missing or you notice any inaccuracies, please contact us.
We have occasionally been contacted by people offered unfunded admission to programs that claim to be fully funded. When people bring this complaint to us, we place the program on our mostly funded list for two years with a note explaining that the funding information on that program's website is incorrect. If, at the end of those two years, nobody else has been offered an unfunded position, then the program will move back to this list, but the year of the last unfunded offer will still be noted. Not fully disclosing your program's financial status to applicants is unethical.

All students admitted to the MFA program are guaranteed up to four years of full financial support, though the program can be completed in three years. All admitted students qualify for graduate assistantships, which include a stipend paid over nine months (currently $14,125), and full payment of up to 15 credit hours of graduate tuition (but not fees). Graduate Council Fellowships ($15,000–$20,000 plus full tuition), McNair Graduate Fellowships ($15,000 plus full tuition), National Alumni Association Fellowships ($15,000 plus full tuition), Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Doctoral Scholarships ($20,000), Truman Capote Fellowships (the award for these positions can vary), Truman Capote Prison Arts Fellowships ($15,000), and editorial positions with Black Warrior Review (the award for these positions can vary) are also available. First-year graduate assistants with fewer than 18 hours of prior graduate coursework in English will be assigned to work in the Writing Center, serve under the supervision of a faculty member as small section discussion leaders for 200-level literature lecture courses, or be assigned other duties as appropriate. In the second year and beyond, graduate assistants routinely teach two courses per semester.
Individual programs additionally offer one-time or ongoing stipend enhancements from our Capote, Loomis, and Harrison funds. New and returning graduate students are also eligible for awards other than assistantships, including Dean's Merit Assistantships ($6000 enhancements to the assistantship stipend, renewable for a total of three years), Alumni Heritage Scholarships ($500), and Teaching Awards (open to all students who have taught at least 4 semesters). The department has use of the Henry E. Jacobs Fund and the Miriam Locke Scholarship to help with graduate student research and conference travel expenses. The Graduate School and the College of Arts & Sciences also offer significant assistance with research and travel costs. The Student Government Association and the department's own English Graduate Organization are additional sources of research and travel funding, along with the Capstone International Center, which allocates funding for international research and travel.
The Graduate School will provide single-coverage health insurance for each assistantship.

All students receive a tuition waiver and a teaching assistantship with a stipend of $10,450 per year. TAs teach one introductory course in their genre per semester. If a GA is classified as a non-resident of Idaho for tuition purposes, the non-resident tuition is waived by the university.
Travel funds are available through the MFA program, though the amount available depends on the year; every student is guaranteed to receive some funding at least once during their time at Boise State. The Boise State Foundation also provides graduate scholarship opportunities. Additional fellowships, scholarships, assistantships, and conference travel funding are also available through the Graduate College, including student emergency funds.

Playwriting, housed in the Department of Theater and Performance Art Studies, is three years. The program provides a financial aid package that covers stipend, tuition, health fee, and health insurance for three years of full-time enrollment. In addition, the program provides stipends for fall and spring semesters for each year of full-time enrollment as well as a stipend for two summers (following first and second years). There is no teaching in the first and third years. Normally, second-year students will teach undergraduate playwriting both semesters: one semester of Playwriting 1 (introduction to playwriting) and one semester of Playwriting 2 (intermediate playwriting), though not necessarily in that order. Exact numbers are not available on the website, but a 2019 applicant reports that the stipend was $26,000/year, with a $2,000-$3,000 summer stipend.
All other tracks are two years. In the first year, all graduate students in the fiction, poetry, and digital and cross-disciplinary tracks receive a non-working fellowship that pays a stipend of $26,276 (2019-2020). Between the first and second academic year, students in good standing receive a summer stipend of $2,920. In the second year, all graduate students in good standing who are qualified will be awarded teaching assistantships for $26,276.
Supplemental funding is available in the form of writing prizes in the literary arts department, emergency grants and loans (both up to $500) from the Graduate School, $650 of conference travel funding, the Joukowsky Summer Research Award, and the International Travel Fund, Research Grants in Judaic Studies.

Three-year program. The majority of students are funded by teaching assistantships at a rate of approximately $16,000/year. New TAs are required to take the six-week training program during the Summer C session (late June to early August). Before that session begins, students need to register for LAE 5370, Teaching English in College, LAE 5946, Teaching English as a Guided Study, and ENG 5933, Pedagogy Internship. For taking this training, TAs receive a tuition waiver and a $1,500 stipend, which will cover fees with a little left over. All TAs generally teach two courses per semester or perform comparable duty in the department. Initially, TAs are assigned to the College Composition Program (first-semester TAs tutor in the Reading-Writing Center), but subsequently, graduate students may teach classes in the major. A TA assigned as a research assistant to a professor is still paid the same and expected to do the same amount of work as with a classroom assignment (in practice, the Department tends to use "TA" as an umbrella term for all students w/an assistantship of any kind). TAs are paid stipends and provided with full tuition waivers. In addition, all first-year TAs automatically receive the $1,000 Graduate Dean's Scholarship (which is spread out over their first-year paychecks). Students do have to pay fees (about $100/hour for out-of-state students and $75/hour for Florida residents). In addition, a $20 per semester facilities use fee is charged.
TAs are often invited to teach during the summer term for an additional stipend. Kingsbury Awards are given yearly. A number of scholarships are available to graduate students. The FAMU Graduate Feeder Scholars Program, Henderson Family Fellowship, Legacy Fellowships, Leslie N. Wilson – Delores Auzenne Assistantship for Minorities, and Nancy H. Marcus Endowment for Graduate Student Excellence are available through the Graduate School. There is also a Graduate Student Research and Creativity Awards Program, Graduate Student Leadership Award, and Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. The Council of Graduate Students also funds conference travel awards.
Insurance is subsidized to the tune of approximately 75%, but not free, for assistants and fellows.

We believe that preferential funding can create an atmosphere of toxic competition among MFAs. All MFA@FLA students receive a full tuition waiver and a fellowship and teaching assistantship package that in 2020 will pay $24,000 per year for each of the three years of the program. Students pay fees of about $750 per semester. During their three years in the program, students teach courses in the English department and in the University Writing Program. For the first year, the appointment for incoming students will consist of mentored teaching (courses team-taught by two incoming graduate students and a senior graduate student) in the University Writing Program. During the second and third years, students will teach one course per semester. In most cases, MFAs teach a combination of composition and professional writing and undergraduate creative writing workshops. Other teaching opportunities may arise, including undergraduate literature and film courses in areas in which you have expertise and TAships for lecture courses taught by our faculty.

NOTE: A previously existing nonfiction track has been cancelled.
Deadline: January 15, 2021
Tracks: Fiction, Poetry
GRE Required: Yes
Student Parents: No dependents allowed on student health insurance, no student family housing, university daycare with special student rates in addition to SFAC and CCAMPIS tuition assistance
TOEFL/IELTS/PTE: TOEFL for all students who have not previously earned a degree with instruction delivered in English from a college or university in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Bahamas, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Jamaica, Liberia, Trinidad, the Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Grenada, Turks and Caicos, or one of the English-speaking Canadian provinces
Application Fee: $50 domestic, $80 international
Application Fee Waiver: No
Interfolio: Yes (leave electronic application blank and send directly to cwp@uh.edu)
Accessibility: Yes and no. Many buildings are new, but some buildings are older. Campus is very large and transportation from one area to another can be challenging. Constant construction on campus and in the city of Houston makes it difficult to predict which areas will have real sidewalk and which will be roped off or paved with dirt and pebbles. Accessible parking spots are available, but the affordable lots are far from campus and the buses that shuttle students back and forth are narrow enough to make wheelchairs or other mobility aids difficult. (Source: current student.)
Three-Year Indian Degree: The Graduate School usually does not accept these degrees as equivalent to a four-year degree, but the department can decide to admit a student with a three-year Indian bachelor's through a special admissions process.
University of Houston Posts
Three-year program with tuition remission and a stipend. The teaching load is 1/2 the first year and then 2/2 the following years (this means you teach one course in fall of your first year and two each spring and fall after that. Starting salary for MFAs is $15,000/year, paid in the fall and spring while you are teaching, and not during the summer, when you are not teaching.
A comprehensive list of fellowships that can either supplement or replace the teaching assistantship is available here. These include fellowships for African American students, working fellowships with Inprint, a local literary arts nonprofit, funds for collaborative work in the arts, and diversity and recruitment fellowships.
The University of Houston will pay up to 50% of the costs of medical insurance, which comes to about $3,000/year for domestic and international students.

Last updated November 3, 2020
NOTE: Fiction professor Colum McCann has been accused of sexual assault by the novelist and short story writer Randa Jarrar (with the well-known writer Roxane Gay, who drove Jarrar home after the incident, verifying her statements). The program was slow to respond to these accusations, and at one point accidentally included a student in internal conversations about the hope that the incident would "blow over" and nobody would "turn the incoming first years against Colum."
SECOND NOTE: This school tends to start accepting students in February, long before applicants have all their other acceptances in, and gives accepted students tight deadlines in February and/or March to make their decision. Some people have experienced this as pressure while others didn't mind. In any case, it will usually mean picking Hunter (or not) before you know if you got in at other schools.
THIRD NOTE: It appears that the memoir program has lost funding and will not be offering tuition remission for 2021 forward.
Deadline: February 1, 2021
Tracks: Poetry, Fiction, Memoir
GRE Required: No
Student Parents: No student family housing, no infant care, daycare for potty-trained children 2.5 to 6 and after-school care for children 6 to 12 with sliding scale fee from $1 to $250/week
TOEFL/IELTS/PTE: TOEFL/IELTS required for all students for whom English is not their native language and the bachelor's was not earned at an English-speaking institution. This requirement exists regardless of citizenship status and is not waived by previous graduate-level study in an English-speaking university or by attendance of part of the undergraduate degree at an English-speaking university.
Application Fee: $75
Application Fee Waiver: Yes, for current graduate non-degree or senior undergraduate students and veterans
Interfolio: No
Accessibility: West Building, where classes are, has push-button doors, elevators, etc. Workshop rooms can be small but space for chairs and other mobility aids can be made. New York has snowy winters that greatly impact the ability of wheelchair users and those with mobility impairments to navigate the sidewalks. Buses can take wheelchairs in theory but are often overcrowded, with subways similarly having no space for chairs or other mobility aids during rush hours. Individual subway stops are also far less likely to be accessible than in cities like Boston that have newer subway systems.
Three-Year Indian Degree: Yes if evaluated and found to be equivalent by Educational Credential Evaluators, Evaluation Service, Inc., Joseph Silny & Associates, Inc., SpanTran: The Evaluation Company, or World Education Services
Hunter College Posts
Two-year program. Hunter offers tuition remission and the chance to teach a course a semester for $2,000 per semester in the second year only. (This means that most students will have an available income of $0 in the first year and $4,000 in the second year.)
Students are responsible for their own insurance in the first year, but can get adjunct health insurance while teaching in their second year.

Accessibility: Workshop building has elevators and wheelchair ramp. Accessible parking and van transport is available, but the vans stop running early in the evening, before workshops finish.
Three-Year Indian Degree: It's complicated. Graduate school admissions workers say the three-year degree is not considered equivalent to a four-year U.S. degree, but the program can appeal if it really wants to admit someone, but the graduate school may reject the appeal.
University of Idaho Posts
Three-year program. Teaching Assistantships and tuition waivers are offered to all students. For 2018-2019, the stipend was $14,000/year. Students teach two courses each in fall and spring, composition in the first two years and creative writing in the final year. Teaching assistants must pay fees. A Hemingway Fellowship from the creative writing program can release students from teaching two courses in the final year. Students are responsible for fees, which come to $1061/semester.
Supplemental funding from the department comes in the form of Hogue Family Centennial Scholarships, Grace V. Nixon Graduate Scholarships, and Estelle Sauve Graduate Scholarships. In addition, the program offers funding for writing conferences and retreats in the form of the Centrum and Writing in the Wild fellowships. Finally, our Graduate and Professional Student Association offers extra-departmental funding for travel, workshops, thesis printing, and COVID-19 relief. Disabled students are also eligible for a George T. Warren Scholarship. The College of Graduate Studies also administers the Outstanding Graduate Student Research and Creative Activity Award and Outstanding Student Teaching Assistant Award.
Students are responsible for their own insurance, which can be purchased from the school for $1902/year.

Three-year program. Full tuition waivers, guaranteed teaching assistantships, and partial fee waivers (students on assistantships or fellowships must still pay $510.51 in 2020-2021) for the duration of the program. In the first year, all MFAs will receive a 1/1 teaching assistantship (one class each in fall and spring) with an annual stipend of $11,740, in addition to a one-time fellowship of $2,500. In the second and third years, candidates will receive a 2/2 teaching assistantship with an annual stipend of $23,835. Teaching assignments will usually be in the undergraduate rhetoric program, but each MFA student will teach at least one undergraduate workshop, with an opportunity to teach additional undergrad classes in creative writing. The Humanities Research Institute offers fellowships for PhD dissertations or MFA theses $22,000/year stipend with tuition and partial fee waivers for yearlong graduate student research projects. Yearlong appointments are also available from the Graduate College in the form of Graduate College Master's Fellowships, Aspire Master's Fellowships for Underrepresented Students, and Diffenbaugh Fellowships for Students from Missouri.

Accessibility: An article in the Indiana Daily Student about poor accommodations at the university makes specific mention of Ballantine Hall, the building in which the English department and creative writing is housed. The building has an accessible entrance in the back. Disability Services was unable to confirm that the accessible entrance led to access to all rooms in the building and at first informed me that they weren't "totally sure we even do that" in reference to students in wheelchairs. "We mostly just give people testing accommodations."
Three-Year Indian Degree: The graduate school says no, but the department says they can get an exception for the right student.

Three-year program. Associate instructors get $19,000/year plus fee remission. College fee remissions typically cover more than 90% of the cost of tuition and fees, but they do not cover mandatory or special course fees. Aid is typically for three years, during which time associate instructors normally teach seven or eight courses (two to three annually), with a minimum of five creative writing workshops in fiction and/or poetry at the 100- and 200-level. Associate instructors also have the opportunity of teaching a course in literary editing and publishing, and in the third year can apply to teach undergraduate literature courses or act as consultants to newer associate instructors. Some appointments are available for editors at the graduate student-run literary magazine, Indiana Review. Future Faculty Teaching Fellowships are available in the final year, with multi-year Graduate Scholars Fellowships and McNair Fellowships offered upon admission. John H. Edwards Fellowships and Wells Graduate Fellowships can be offered at any stage of the degree.
Supplemental funding is available through the creative writing program. Summer work at the Indiana University Writers' Conference is available. The College of Arts and Sciences gives awards for travel, Matias L. Ochoada Fellowships, and Dr. William Slaymaker Graduate Fellowships. The Office of International Services provides Eoyang-Lee Fellowships and Irving & Lena Lo Scholarships. The University Graduate School provides Irving and Shirley Brand Graduate Fellowships, Adam W. Herbert Ph.D. and Master's Fellowships, Santosh Jain Scholarships, Master's Thesis Awards, Herbert Master's Fellowships, Educational Opportunity Fellowships, and Grant-in-Aid awards. FLAS Fellowships for language study are available. Conference funding and Yiddish study prizes are available through Jewish Studies. Funding for the study of Eastern European languages is available both internationally and via approved summer programs, along with funding for any language workshop. International travel can be funded through IU Global. The Graduate & Professional Student Government gives Research Awards and Travel Awards. Islamic Studies also funds travel.
Health insurance is among the fees waived by an associate instructor position or a fellowship.

Three-year program. Teaching assistants work 20 hours per week for a total of $19,250/year with full tuition waiver. Three-year program. Tuition remission, including for summers in which students are not on assistantships, and a stipend with each assistantship. Assistantship stipends are $17,850 for the nine-month school year, minus university fees of $1,381.45/semester. While assistants usually teach one course per semester, assistantships can also involve editorial positions at the Southern Review or New Delta Review, as well as administrative positions for the department.
Travel funding available via Graduate Student Association Travel Award and by application to the college and department. Creative writing awards are given by the program to its students. Summer teaching assistantship funding, while referenced in the admission contract, is difficult to obtain in practice due to the prioritization of current instructors.
Health insurance is available at an annual rate of $2,728 per student. No portion of the cost is covered by assistantships (but it once was partially covered, so if you see materials that say otherwise, that's because they're outdated).
